It might feel like a crucial omission, but the new Frogman looks to make up for it with an all-new G-Shock Frogman app, which does everything from managing time adjustments and changing watch settings to checking on local tide conditions, managing a long-term dive log, exceeding the digital version (which could only remember up to 20 dives). It also makes a fair amount of sense to devote a large part of its dial real estate to the watch’s dual-time functionality, seeing as the majority of the world’s sport divers are also avid travelers, by necessity, in order to get to their favorite dive spots. As Casio does with its other premium Bluetooth-enabled G-Shocks, setting both “home” and “local” times is a breeze with the app. And in lieu of showing current depth, the primary utility of the new Frogman is as a dedicated dive and surface interval timer. Where a traditional analog dive watch would do this by means of reading the minute hand against a rotating bezel, the Frogman does this without a bezel by decoupling and overlapping the handset, which then acts as a running singular 60 minute counter when the watch hits the water — not entirely unlike a Regulateur dive watch, of which there’s only one that I’m aware of. The overlapping hand utility in the movement is really quite cool, and it would be perfectly tailored for measuring depth or acting as a compass (another feature notably absent from this reference), but even without it, the new Frogman is a very neat piece of kit that any frequent-flying sport diver should be able to appreciate — just as long as it’s paired with a proper dive computer. Now, Casio has brought its most basic level of connectivity to the Frogman dive-centric watch line with the GWF-A1000. It’s not what I’d call a smartwatch, but it uses Bluetooth tech to make living with the watch easier, while also adding some features relevant to those who may go diving with it. The new Frogman dive watch boasts more than just a tech update. The previously all-digital face has been swapped for an analog face, then wrapped in the brand’s iconic carbon monocoque body. Design Andy Boxall/Digital Trends The GWF-A1000 may have an analog movement, but it’s still obviously a G-Shock Frogman in its design. Those familiar with the range will recognize the trademark asymmetrical style and the frog logo on the case back. The asymmetrical shape stops the case from hitting your wrist when you’re bending it, and makes the buttons easier to press. There are four buttons in total, with only those on the left of the case being immediately obvious. The other two flank the attractively knurled and very grippy crown. With its carbon monocoque construction Casio has been able to remove the button guards found on previous Frogman watches, yet retain the overall strength, while also making the watch much lighter. It weighs 119 grams ( pounds), down from the 141 grams for the previous generation watch. That’s an improvement, but you definitely know it’s on your wrist. For comparison, the heaviest Apple Watch Series 5 weighs still comes in at under 50 grams — or pounds. Try to purposefully damage the Frogman, or any G-Shock really, and you’d probably fail. It’s also really large, with a case size of 56mm and a whopping 19mm thickness. Then again, the size should be no surprise. The Frogman has always been one of G-Shock’s largest and most recognizable watches, and the A1000 is no exception. The thickness alludes to the key G-Shock’s key trait: toughness. The all-in-one carbon case envelopes the movement and technology inside, giving the watch supreme shock protection and an ISO-rated 200-meter water resistance. It’s resistant to magnetic fields and vibrations, and the face is covered with scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. The thick fluoroelastomer band is secured on the watch by large pins through the carbon/resin case, and is itself resistant to water and dirt. You could try to purposefully damage the Frogman, or any G-Shock really, but you’d probably fail. This wearability, combined with the unique design and useful tech, is what makes me love G-Shock watches. Andy Boxall/Digital Trends The sapphire crystal has superb clarity and a distinctive sheen, plus a very subtle curve to it, adding depth to the face and catching the light beautifully on the wrist. The buttons are large and have a positive action. The screw-down crown takes a little effort to loosen (don’t forget to screw it back up again, otherwise the watch won’t be water resistant), but it’s no problem to do so, even when the watch is on your wrist. How is it on the wrist? You, and everyone else, will know it’s there. This is a statement watch and highly noticeable. The strap isn’t especially pliable, but this hasn’t been a problem as the watch should be worn loosely. I never felt the watch was uncomfortable unless it was underneath a sleeve. Make no mistake, it’s not for skinny wrists. Because of the bulk, it’s best to push your sleeve back when wearing the Frogman. You will have to make a few compromises if you plan to wear the A1000 every day, but then I personally don’t really think it is an everyday watch in the first place. To me, it’s a dive-focused summer watch worn to be shown off. Andy Boxall/Digital Trends The Frogman’s busy, asymmetric design means it’s not for everyone. It’s clearly not for small wrists, for example, but Casio’s switch to analog brings it into line with other popular dive watches from makers like Seiko, and the moderate reduction in weight and bulk means it could appeal to those who are less likely to actually go diving with it. Make no mistake though, it’s not for skinny wrists. I’ve long been a fan of the Frogman’s unusual design, and replacing the digital display with three subdials and a small date window has done nothing to change its visual appeal. G-Shock Connected app The Frogman connects to the G-Shock Connected app on your phone using Bluetooth. It’s well-designed, fast, stable, and provides an easy way to change various features on the watch, in addition to managing dive-specific features. I like the way it remembers all other Bluetooth-equipped G-Shock watches too, so there’s no need to perform any additional setup after registering a new model, a feature I would love to see in WearOS. Andy Boxall/Digital Trends Connection is simple to activate with a single button press on the watch. I used the GWF-A1000 connected to an iPhone 11 Pro, but there’s also an app available for Android. Setting the World Time is a great example of how the app speeds up some processes. Tap the World Time tab, select your city, and tap sync. The time is then sent to the Frogman’s subdial, and the complete process takes no time at all. A button tap in the app swaps the world and home times quickly too, which is great for travel. This simplicity of use is repeated when setting alarms and timers. For divers, the app includes a dive log feature, and the ability to add a tide point measurement location. It’s a long button press to put the watch into Dive Mode, at which time the main hour and minute hands move to the 12 o’clock position, and the time swaps to the World Time subdial. Start the dive and the second hand starts, with elapsed total time shown by the main hands, which move together as one for clarity. Bright lume on the hands and on the bezel between the 12 and 20 position make judging time in the dark easy. Stop the dive sequence and the hands return to 12 o’clock, and the second hands goes in reverse to indicate surface interval time. The data from the watch is then saved in the app, complete with location data and the chance to add photos, as well as include information on conditions, depth, temperature, and your gear. Both the dive mode and the dive log are easy to use, even for someone not familiar with dive watches, but you do have to spend a short time learning how it all works. The good news is the app provides comprehensive instructions on how everything works, acting as a digital manual too. The watch doesn’t have a vibrate feature, so there’s no chance of notification support ever being added. This isn’t something I’d really want on the watch, but it’s a shame Casio doesn’t just add an accelerometer and step tracking to all its connected watches. Having this general feature would add value to the GWF-A1000. The connection to the iPhone app is constant unless you disconnect it or fully close the app. While it’s connected, it does activate your phone’s GPS, meaning it’ll draw some battery power. Andy Boxall/Digital Trends While the Frogman doesn’t deliver notifications, have a touchscreen, or run apps, the Bluetooth connection makes using the watch’s functions quicker and easier, while also adding some relevant functionality to increase the watch’s usefulness. The Menu button at 8 o’clock switches between Tide mode, calendar mode, the stopwatch, and the timer. The 3 o’clock subdial shows the watch’s status, and also displays the tide point when it has been set in the app. The buttons are precise and have a hefty feel to them. I like the way you can press a button and the hands move out of the way so you can easily view the two subdials as well. The time can be set through the app, where it’s based on the time on your phone, or through the radio-controlled Multi Band 6 system, where the correct time is wirelessly taken from a series of remote stations around the world at set intervals. In my experience, Multi Band 6 usually requires some patience before it works. It’s dependent on location and signal, making the app the fastest way to adjust the time after changing time zones. The crown can also be used to set the time. I enjoyed the the speed with which the hands move when using special features. They’re fast, so you’re never waiting for them to get out of the way, and nothing feels like it takes too long. We’re conditioned to expect devices to react speedily these days, and the GWF-A1000’s triple dual-core motors that control the hands can keep up with our demands. Andy Boxall/Digital Trends It’s important to note that although this is a dive watch, it does not have a depth sensor, something the all-digital GWF-D1000 G-Shock Frogman watches have. Whether this makes it less of a dive watch is up for debate and will potentially depend on how serious you are about diving, but it’s arguably in keeping with the design and build alterations, which push the GWF-A1000 toward the watch fan who may never actually go diving at all. Battery and charging Just because the Frogman has a Bluetooth connection doesn’t mean it requires regular charging using a cable. The GWF-A1000 has solar charging and doesn’t require any other power to continue working. Battery level can be checked in the app, and if the battery goes flat, it takes two hours of direct sunlight for it to start operating again, and a further 21 hours until it’s full. Times vary depending on the light source, but the watch will take energy from anything down to fluorescent lighting in the house. Acclaimed as a masterpiece by most customers, the G-Shock Frogman is what every diving enthusiast or even professional would want. From the start, you must be aware that this is a massive watch capable of withstanding more shocks and water depths than your body can. So if this sounds as what you look for, then read on. The Frogman comes with a fully digital display split into two parts. At the top, you can see the moon graph which shows the different moon phases and below is the main display that shows the hour and day of the week by default. Of course, the other features can be accessed using the buttons on the sides and they will appear on this main display. The Frogman as many other G-Shocks is highly customizable, so you will just have to get the hang of the buttons in order to set it as you wish. The watch features two very important graphs for divers and everyone that works or lives near the sea/ocean. And here I refer to the Moon Graph and Tide Graph. With these, you can identify for example when is the propitious time to get underwater in order to get your job done, and basically all activities that imply the need of knowing low and high levels of the sea. These two graphs work hand in hand since tides are partly created by the gravitational forces of the moon. When the moon graph shows a full moon, the gravitational forces of the sun and moon are combined, so expect high tides to be higher and low tides to be lower; these tides are called spring tides. During moon’s quarter phases, the difference between high and low tides is smaller and these tides are called neap tides. It may not make sense at first, but if you search the subject preferably with images you can understand the phenomenon better. I find these two graphs to be very useful on a divers watch and probably this is one of the reasons why the Frogman is so appreciated by many people. Other nice features include the countdown timer which has a measuring unit of one second and a setting range from 1 minute to 24 hours, loud daily alarms that feature 4 daily alarms and one snooze alarm, the world time feature with a total of 31 time zones and last but not least the solar charging capability. Casio is well-known for creating high-quality self-charging watches and the Frogman is no exception. Thanks to this feature you won’t have to think about swapping the batteries anymore. Although the Frogman is a watch that comes closer to perfection that many other dive watches do, it still has its small flaws. The clasp with the two pins that securely closes the band has a kind of design flaw that makes the pointy end of it irritate the skin and the illumination is good but not something to be praised for. Also, I would have liked to see a depth meter on this watch. Again, these are not major imperfections, but definitely important to note. It’s true, this is not a very cheap watch, but considering that the Frogman has some of the best specs on the market for a divers watch and at the same time is highly resistant and made of quality materials that will last for years then I think it is worth it. For Baselworld 2016, Casio has introduced one of the most impressively cool G-Shock watches in a while with the brand new model GWF-D1000 Frogman diver. Casio’s premier serious diving G-Shock watch has retained everything we love about a Casio G-Shock and has grown into the more serious diving computer we believe Casio has produced. Casio has finally developed a neat-looking tool that modern divers can use for more than basic timing information, as well as a timepiece that you can theoretically wear on a daily basis. It isn’t cheap, but this is one of the best G-Shock watches around that isn’t a novelty watch and is the exact kind of device that helped make G-Shock watches as popular as they are today. According to Casio, the original G-Shock Frogman was introduced in 1993 and like many of their core collections has evolved over time as the company added more and more features to its G-Shock rescue diver. Many of those advancements were about making the Casio G-Shock Frogman a better watch such as making it more durable or solar-powered. For 2016, The Casio G-Shock Frogman GWF-D1000 family (which includes the reference GWF-D1000-1 and GWF-D1000B-1 (blue color accents) has been upgraded to incorporate the features of a relatively robust dive computer – while still retaining all the same features and conveniences of a Casio G-Shock. These convenience features include Casio’s full swathe of functions such as the “Tough Solar” light-powered movement, atomic clock radio signal accuracy control system, and intense case durability. Most of the inner case is actually DLC-coated steel and the Frogman is further water resistant to 200 meters. Casio also added three sensors which measure the temperature (in centigrade increments), depth gauge, and compass. Casio really improved on the compass system and optimized it for diving use. The compass now comes with an automatic horizontal compensation system which allows the compass to be useful with a tilt of up to 80 degrees. This is very useful while swimming and needing to follow a particular directional bearing and not having to always adjust your arm to get a proper compass reading. This is really one of the major new innovations, and it is one that in various forms has and will make its way to other 2016 and future Casio compass watches. As a dive computer, the Casio G-Shock Frogman GWF-D1000 logs your dive time, tracking your depth, recording the water temperature, and logging the data for up to 20 dives. That means the Casio G-Shock Frogman GWF-D1000 acts as a more or less complete dive computer. What isn’t clear is whether or not the system suggests ascent times with decompression stops. However, the system does have an alarm if it thinks you are ascending too quickly. Yes, there are other dedicated dive computers with more functions to help professional and recreational divers with how long to stay down and when to come up, as well as help track remaining oxygen, but Casio designed the Casio G-Shock Frogman GWF-D1000 for serious use that is much closer to profession dive computers than ever before. I’d consider it to be a pro-level back-up diving computer for seasoned divers who know what they are doing, as well as a reliable backup diving computer for recreational divers. With that said there are a number of features that dedicated diving computers have which the Frogman doesn’t – so all divers should be aware of and understand their equipment before using them in a diving scenario. Casio also includes a range of time and calendar-related information such as moon phase indicator on the dial as well as a tide chart. You also get all the standard Casio G-Shock functions such as the stopwatch, countdown timer, alarms, etc… It really feels like the best of G-Shock suddenly became an even more serious tool watch for pros and nerds alike – though it would be hard to justify getting a Casio G-Shock Frogman GWF-D1000 if you never intended on taking it into the water. On paper, this all sounds great but what does the 2016 Casio G-Shock Frogman GWF-D1000 feel like on the wrist? The first thing you notice when you hold the watch is how much more sturdy and solid it feels as compared to most less-expensive or less-engineered Casio G-Shock timepieces. The entire inner part of the case is black DLC-coated steel, which has the resin “armor” of all G-Shock timepieces. The screen is totally new as well, offering a better resolution and more crisp display. This isn’t the G-Shock watch you grew up with. Over the dial of the (and 18mm-thick) Frogman case is a sapphire crystal. This isn’t the first time Casio has used a sapphire crystal on a G-Shock case, but you can imagine that such components are rare in the G-Shock collection. Style-wise, the Casio G-Shock Frogman GWF-D1000 isn’t trying to win any beauty contests, but succeeds in being a distinctly modern and very “G-Shock” tool watch that inspires the same amount of “nerd want” as any other high-performance tool watch. I won’t lie in saying that the Casio G-Shock Frogman GWF-D1000 isn’t large, but it is wearable. Though, if I had a complaint, it would be that the included strap (which is carbon fiber reinforced) is a bit on the long side for daily wear on your wrist, as opposed to over a large dive suit. Casio designed the Casio G-Shock Frogman GWF-D1000 to be worn in very cold waters and, thus, over a dry suit. That means the standard strap is going to be a bit on the longer side. It is possible that Casio might come out with a shorter strap and include a diver’s extension strap. If they don’t then no doubt there will be after-market ways of wearing the Casio G-Shock Frogman GWF-D1000 on a smaller strap. Note that the new Casio G-Shock Frogman GWF-D1000 makes use of Casio’s new extra-durable strap and lug system which secures the strap to the case using a very solid carbon rod. Enthusiasts will appreciate some of the more minor updates to the design of this newest generation Frogman, as well as the updated Frogman logo. The swimming frog character now wears a helmet and carries a flashlight. The implication is that the Frogman is is more durable and functional then ever. Nothing about the Casio G-Shock Frogman GWF-D1000 feels cheap, and the overall fit and finish are quite different than the G-Shock family’s more entry-level models. In the scheme of diving computers, the Casio G-Shock Frogman GWF-D1000 isn’t the cheapest item nor is it the most expensive. Though, with the ability to never change a battery, for it to have full “watch functions,” in addition to being a legitimate dive computer, the price feels more than fair. Other aBlogtowatch team members who dive such as James and Max agree that the new Casio G-Shock Frogman GWF-D1000 is an amazing timepiece which they want to dive with as soon as possible. You might still want to dive with a more full-featured dive computer, but most will not serve well (or at all) as timepieces outside of the water – while the Casio G-Shock Frogman GWF-D1000 is good for both environments. I fully anticipate Casio to release a few more colors of the Casio G-Shock Frogman GWF-D1000 in addition to the standard black with red accents Casio G-Shock Frogman GWF-D1000 and the (currently not planned for official availability in the US) black and blue GWF-D1000B-1. With that said, those are the only two models available now. If you are a regular diver then you will likely use the majority of the functions in the Casio G-Shock Frogman GWF-D1000 on a regular basis.
